A podcast

about University in Canada and how to get ahead.

My podcast aims to provide a comprehensive and authentic insight into the university experience in Canada. It features students from various programs, faculties, and institutions with unique experiences. Listeners can expect to gain an understanding of how programs differ between institutions and develop a sense of what opportunities exist, as undergraduates, in their field of specialization. Under the resources sections, listeners can find a host of opportunities to get meaningful experience in whichever industry interests them.

Welcome to Beyond the Diploma, where we discuss navigating the university experience in Canada, and share insight and tools for success.

My name’s Octavian , and I’m an undergraduate chemistry student at the University of British Columbia, and a Clinical Research Assistant in the Division of General Surgery at Vancouver General Hospital. I’m passionate about education, and finding opportunities that interest you.

I’ve decided to launch this podcast for a few reasons, firstly because I wish there would have been a resource like this when I was applying to University: a place, with a series of interviews from different students, in different programs, faculties, and institutions. There are a lot of creators who talk about their unique experiences at their university, but up until recently, there wasn’t a place developing a collection of interviews from students all over Canada.

I host guests who are serious about their degree and have a unique experience. For example, they've worked Co-op placements, done internships abroad, applied internationally, transferred between institutions, travelled for club competitions, or play a team sport. There’s a lot to cover, so like most podcasts, I want this to be interactive with the audience. So, please reach out about your suggestions for topics to cover, and information you’d like to learn more about. In the episodes section you’ll be able to see upcoming guests.

Another goal I have for this podcast is to provide value when it comes to networking, getting internships, getting research positions, how to brand yourself and your skills, and insights into the intricacies that aren’t really spoken about.

The long-term vision for the podcast is to eventually have a series of playlists that are dedicated to the process of applying to graduate school, and that discuss first-hand experiences from medical students, dental students, and graduate students in other fields.

If you have a unique experience and want to share what you’ve learned, please reach out!
